Del resto la famiglia come valore essenziale e conditio sine qua non dell'esistenza resta il motore della saga, che esplora daccapo il passato di Dom e ritorna sulla morte del padre. La tragedia menzionata nel primo film Fast & Furious, 2001 diventa il pivot del nono episodio che introduce il fratello di Dom e Mia. Dopo aver scoperto melodrammaticamente di avere un figlio Fast & Furious 8, l'eroe ritrova shakespearianamente Jakob, avversario di statura interpretato da John Cena, wrestler minerale che apporta una nuova 'dimensione' alla saga. Partita dalle corse clandestine, la fast family abita oggi il genere Mission Impossible, con più inseguimenti naturalmente e meno verosimiglianza, se la cosa fosse possibile. Fuorilegge, ladri, spie, i nostri hanno lasciato la strada e le rampe dei parcheggi puntando letteralmente lo spazio. Non c'è davvero più niente che possa costringerli coi piedi a terra e le ruote per terra. Ganci in mezzo al cielo, macchine volanti, Pontiac lunari, non c'è sfida che non possa essere vinta con inventività plastica e una dose massiccia di autoderisione. Come se Justin Lin anche co-sceneggiatore e co-produttore leggesse i pensieri dello spettatore e lo rassicurasse sull'insensatezza dei capovolgimenti e dei cappottamenti. Non c'è da prenderli troppo sul serio, saltate a bordo, al volo o in scivolata come i cugini di Hazzard, e lasciatevi condurre. Raramente è stato così evidente constatare l'influenza dei disegni animati di Tex Avery e Chuck Jones sul cinema d'azione hollywoodiano. L'interesse di Fast & Furious risiede proprio in quella maniera insolente e incosciente di inventare un universo da cartoon al cuore del quale rimbalzano con grande fracasso personaggi quasi indistruttibili. E sulla natura invincibile dei nostri eroi, si interroga nel corso del film Roman Tyrese Gibson, invulnerabile alle pallottole. Ma i Toretto non rispondono nemmeno più alle leggi della fisica nello sforzo di mettere le mani sulle due metà di un congegno bramato e inseguito ai quattro angoli del mondo. Appoggiato da sempre sui motori truccati e la famiglia, quella biologica e quella 'allargata', Fast & Furious scomoda ancora vecchi alleati, il redivivo Sung Kang e l'intramontabile Helen Mirren, e vecchi nemici, Charlize Theron sardonica e 'in gabbia' e Jason Statham mai così in forma e determinato a metà dei titoli di coda. Con lui ritroviamo i componenti rimasti della squadra storica Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris e persino Jordana Brewster, che torna nelle vesti di Mia Toretto dopo un film di pausa dal ruolo. Sung Kang, come detto, fa il suo trionfale ritorno sulle scene con il suo Han di nuovo in pista e, insieme con lui, rivediamo anche Lucas Black nelle vesti di Sean Boswell, il protagonista di Tokyo Drift recentemente rivisto anche nella saga principale.
